During the imm cologne the Museum for Applied Arts and Design Cologne – the so called MAKK – has this year a very special program. The special exhibition ” Von Aalto bis Zumthor” shows exclusive furniture, designed by architects, from the past 100 years. At the design talk „Design’s two Ways“ designers from Italy and Germany discus about the different approach to design.
From Aalto to Zumthor – furniture designed by architects
The first designers of the early 20th century were architects. They designed pieces of furniture and many other objects for their clients, because they did not find good design on the market. Today there is a large variety of well designed furniture, designed by industrial designers as well as product designers. It is an own profession nowadays but some architects still love to invent their own design pieces.
The exhibition presents furniture designed by architects. Do they design in a different way than professional designers? Do they prefer a special design language, forms, ideas like micro architecture or what else? Is their design more minimalistic, geometric, puristic? The visitors are invited to make out their own résumé. The Museum for Applied Arts and Design Cologne has a splendid international renowned design collection.
It will present pieces of it’s permanent collection such as furniture from Frank Lloyd Wright, the Bauhaus and de Stijl period and all the following decades. In addition to the museum exhibits we will show outstanding design pieces of the most important modern architects, for example Ron Arad, Norman Foster, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind, Jean Nouvel, Hadi Teherani, Peter Zumthor and some other leading and designing architects. In close cooperation with them and their manufacturers we will find and present an exclusive choice for the exhibition.
„Design’s two Ways“
The architecture design and art magazine Arbitrate invites to a debate to explore the two main possibilities open to designers – the Italian way, a continuation of design history and the achievements of the great design masters, according to which the road to furniture design is through architecture, and the German way according to which furniture design is a specific offshoot of product design. Participators at the discussion are star designers Patricia Urquiola and Stafan Diez as well as architect and journalist Marco Romanelli. The design talk takes place at Thursday, 17th January at the MAKK (Overstolzensaal).
